styx taxi review

Filed under: writing, comics, folks — Elizabeth @ 9:12 pm

Wow — haven’t seen one of these in a while.

Most of it is about our story, “A Coda Vita,” though he doesn’t mention either me or Leland by name. Ah, well.

Thanks to our pal Steven for the heads up on this one.

“newly gutted renovation! must see!”

So we went out apartment hunting today, in the Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill/Pratt area. And, OMG you won’t believe the steal we found on this one-bedroom — it’s over 1000 square feet, soooo cheep, and it’s even got skylights:

The good news: Pixie Smith learned her trade at Pratt. We’d practically be neighbors, a century and some change ago. I wonder if she still hangs out. Probably not.

Yeah. I think we need to expand our search parameters to include Bay Ridge and (*shriek*) Astoria.

It’s going to be a long… month or two. Join us for the hilarity — we’ll be keeping a set of crappy camera phone photos of our adventure here.

when good crafting turns petty, bitchy and mean

Filed under: yarn, etc — Elizabeth @ 9:40 am

I’ve been hanging around the crafting Internet for a long time now, and I’ve never seen anything like this:

Sew Fast/Sew Easy Inc., a New York based company, uses aggressive legal tactics to bully small, social knitting chapters nationwide over the use of the term “Stitch and Bitch” or any variant of those three words. None of these small knitting chapters operates for profit.

You have got to be kidding me.

Here’s a case of “what are they thinking?”. They sound like a bunch of old hags, bitter that sewing hasn’t taken off with the kids today they way knitting has. Do they really think that’s good for business? The link has details of the kinds of things they’ve been doing in support of their cause. I wonder if they’ve gone after Debbie Stoller. Yeah, it was the name, guys — that’s why you’re not the darlings of the sewing revolution.

I made a special trip to SFSE once. They were small, cramped, and overpriced. You’re not missing much.

As an alternative to the lame fanny pack pattern I bought there back in early 2000, all you have to do is check out the zillions of sewn bag tutorials posted by the nice folks on Craftster.

obligatory act-i-vate post

Filed under: comics, folks — Elizabeth @ 10:37 pm

I’d be incredibly remiss if I didn’t mention Act-I-vate, Dean Haspiel’s new virtual studio of wicked hot cartoonists. Including my husband-to-be.

You can check out the action here. Said hubby’s piece begins here.

SOLOMON!

Filed under: esoterica, folks — Elizabeth @ 10:27 pm

So, several days ago now (was it on the weekend?) I was sitting there, thumbing through my spring announcements issue of Publisher’s Weekly (which I can’t seem to lay my hands on right now), when what pops out at me but the latest book from Lon. I promptly squealed (I’ve been doing that a lot lately), then emailed him and squealed. In the email.

Lon’s latest is all about Solomon, y’see:

solomon

Everything I know about Solomon, I learned from Lon over a plate of fries in a hotel bar in Chicago. I asked Lon to give me the skinny because everything on the Internet on Solomon is written by whack jobs and is therefore pretty much incomprehensible. Or at least it was back then. That was a long time ago.

So it’s time for a refresher course on the man. And who better for a refresher course on Solomon than Lon, especially since he gave me the skinny in the first place?

There’s probably more than a bit on Masonry in there, another incomprehensible subject. Act now and you’ll be all ready when Dan Brown’s next book comes out. (What, you think I’m kidding?)

pondering

Filed under: babbling — Elizabeth @ 10:09 pm

I don’t understand how the days get away from me. How can I look up and it’s Wednesday already? Where does the time go?

I don’t get it. I just don’t get it.

(The Kathleen Ragan book is great, by the way.)
