egglings, other news

Filed under: comics, folks — Elizabeth @ 7:32 pm

Liz Gorinsky, who is an awsome force to be reckoned with, came to the reading last night bearing Egglings:

eggling

Are those the bomb or what?

The reading was gobs of fun. We had a pretty decent turnout, all things considered. Tom Hart and the KGB clan run a good gig. NYC comics folks are the best.

Confidential to my mom and Aunt Nita: no podcasts, guys, but not to worry — it’s not like this is gonna be my last. :)

reading tomorrow night at KGB

If you’re in New York and you’ve had all the turkey that you can stand, come on down to KGB tomorrow night and hear some comics. That’s right — hear. Including one of mine.

heh

Graphic Novelists at KGB

Start: Nov 26 2006 - 7:41pm
End: Nov 26 2006 - 9:00pm

Dan Goldman will be reading from “Kelly”, which is currently being serialized on ACT-I-VATE. “Kelly” is a romance comic dressed up as a psychedelic Craigslist roommate thriller.

Elizabeth Genco will be reading from her story about stories, “Scheherazade.”

Nick Bertozzi will be reading from the upcoming work about Picasso, Braque, the art world of France in the 20s, “The Salon”.

Margo Dabaie will be reading from her work about growing up Palestinian Christian in America.

It’s a fun lineup including two of our good buds.

fluting in the car: the zeitgeist?

Filed under: et cetera — Elizabeth @ 6:35 pm

As most creative peeps I know equate marketing with shoving hot pins beneath their fingers, I have to wonder if you guys read marketer galore Seth Godin’s ginormously popular blog. I do, and I highly recommend it. Over the past few days he has posted a couple of times about a trend that is as goofy as it is disturbing:

The flutes!

flutist celtic interpretation

I think that might be a recorder in the photo in the first post. I should know — I played the recorder. (Yeah, yeah, so every fourth grader in the history of Orono played the recorder.)

In other news, I promise that marketing is not the root of all evil. In fact, it can often lead to writing and creating more. But that’s something for another time.

1. Next year’s World Fantasy is in upstate New York.
2. Guy Gavriel Kay will be there.
3. The theme is ghosts. And folklore. Ghosts in folklore.

Please hold while I pass out.

Someone oughtta get Bob Place involved. He lives in the area and is an expert on Washington Irving.

Guy Gavriel Kay is a dude.

I miss her. Click around her photo stream and you’ll find pictures of the scarf I knitted for her in a day.

stand by for just a little more martha

Filed under: et cetera, d.i.y. — Elizabeth @ 10:51 pm

So there I was in B&N, making my bi- or tri-weekly magazine run, because magazines (especially craft magazines) are kind of one of my weaknesses, and I’m tooling around, uninspired, and in the back of my head the voice is niggling. “There’s something here, something you’re not seeing… something wicked cool… just keep walking…” And it’s not showing up, and all the mags are pawed over and crumpled because this is a B&N in Brooklyn (forgive me, guys, but it’s the truth). And I’m about to walk out, when… there, hanging out on an endcap by the bargain books all by itself, there it is, my personal savior of the season:

martha 2, electric bugaloo

She shoots, she scores!

Yes!

And right there next to it lay the “collectible cookie edition” of EVERYDAY FOOD.

Life is good.

I’m about to order this on Kelly Sue’s recommendation, but I saw Martha’s new tome at B&N yesterday and chuckled to myself. See, my mom bought HOME COMFORTS for me a few Christmases ago. It’s fabulous, and about as comprehensive a reference as you’ll find, and I can see it on the shelf from where I’m sitting, nestled comfortably between the Ouija board and the Woody Guthrie autobio. I don’t need (cue Dad’s voice) another 750-page book on keeping house, and yet…

I’m putting it on my wishlist. Mom, I’m looking at you.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch… Martha has DVDs now?

mythic beasts at amnh

Ooo:

Mythic Beasts @ the American Museum of Natural History

MYTHIC BEASTS

May 2007–January 2008

TRACK THE ORIGINS OF LEGENDARY CREATURES INCLUDING DRAGONS, UNICORNS, MERMAIDS, AND SEA SERPENTS

The myth of the Cyclops may have been fueled by fossil discoveries. Ancient Greeks who uncovered the skulls of dwarf prehistoric elephants on Mediterranean islands may have mistaken the central nasal cavity—where the trunk was attached—for a single eye socket, that suggested one-eyed giants had once roamed the land.

Mythic Beasts, an enchanting exhibition that traces the cultural and natural history roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythological creatures for the first time, is scheduled to open in May 2007. Legendary beasts of land, sea, and air such as dragons, griffins, mermaids, sea serpents, and unicorns are highlighted in this major exhibition scheduled to remain on view through January 2008, after which it will travel to other venues.

For thousands of years, fantastical creatures have been embedded in the human experience through legends and fables, ancient art, and even in the accounts of early naturalists. Mythic Beasts will include spectacular sculptures, paintings, and textiles, along with a number of cultural objects ranging from medieval tapestries to shadow puppets to ceremonial masks and helmets from around the world which will bring to light surprising similarities as well as differences in the ways peoples around the world have envisioned and depicted these strange and wonderful creatures.
