good news and bad news

in fantasy, folklorish, folks

The bad news first. After over 10 years online, the Endicott Studio web presence, including the blog and the Journal of Mythic Arts, is moving to archive mode.

It’s a natural decision. Creations and creative processes have life cycles, and that includes endings. As things like wheels and The Majors teach us, however, there are Fools right behind the doors of The World, and, counterintuitive and frightening as it may be, the Fool at the edge of the cliff with her foot in the air is truly a magical moment in time. From Terri’s last post:

And so, dear readers, we’ve decided it’s time, after eleven years, to close the Journal of Mythic Arts . . . which includes closing down this blog as well. We’re a small organization, and we want to carve out time to move on to some new projects…as well as for our own creative work. I was quite touched when a review (a year or two ago) referred to Midori and me as “the godmothers and muses of the mythic arts field” . . . but at the same, I have found myself reflecting on the following words from Anais Nin: “For too many centuries women have been busy being muses to artists. I wanted to be the muse…but I was really trying to avoid the final issue — that I had to do the job myself.” There’s a point in a woman’s life (since we’re not getting any younger!) when it is time to narrow ones focus.

So that’s the good news. Plus, Terri and Midori both have extensive web presences. There will be new projects for Endicott.

And when I think about the world of mythic fiction today - the blogs and discussion forums and the absolute return of urban fantasy to young adult fiction (!!) and on and on, well, I have a hard time getting choked up. I’m just thankful.

I love you, ladies!

Thanks E! It’s been great fun getting to know you as well — and being inspired by the new edge you bring to Mythic Arts.

I’ll be choked up for you! I totally, TOTALLY understand the reasoning behind this decision and am excited about the direction Terri and Midori’s lives will take. And I’m thrilled that I can still have some contact with them, as an admirer of all they do, through their newer sites. And yet I am still devastated. Neil Gaiman, Lisa Snellings-Clark, and Endicott Studio…they were the big three…ARE the big three…that have been the inspiration for what I do on my site and why I do it. I ache for the loss that I feel all the while understanding and being happy for them. Things do change, it is very natural and very often very good. And yet I hate change and the hurt that accompanies it. I appreciate your input into what Endicott Studio was as well.
