writing projects
UPDATED February 2008
Upcoming (just so far!) in 2008: a story with Carla Speed McNeil in COMIC BOOK TATTOO: A TORI AMOS ANTHOLOGY (Image) and a story for an as-yet-unannounced SMITH magazine project.
I’m a contributing editor to WEIRD TALES magazine, under the direction of Stephen H. Segal (who rocks, mightily). You can catch my interviews in every issue, as well as some other thingymabobs here and there.
Two shorts out still relatively recently: “Cooling,” a YA prose bit with art by Leland, was featured in Endicott’s YA fiction issue in mid-2007 and is now archived here. “The Dog Lady,” with Jeff Zornow, will be out in Cryptic #5.
Another short story, YES MOTHER, illustrated by Finnish darling Sami Makkonen, made its debut in Negative Burn #13 (Desperado/Image).
I recently completed an adaptation of FRANKENSTEIN for Graphic Planet, illustrated by Jason Ho. It’ll make its way to libraries first, then I hear tell that it’ll be out through Image after that. But no promises on that one — we shall see. Find it on Amazon here.
I’m a member of The Endicott Studio, Terri Windling and Midori Snyder’s organization devoted to myth and folklore in the arts. You can find my contributions, including book reviews, on the Endicott blog. Old reviews are here, and on the Endicott site (in shortened form).
My webcomic serial, SCHEHERAZADE, can be found at the Chemistry Set, a webcomic collective featuring writer/artist teams. The ever-talented daemon-with-a-pencil, Adam Boorman, is the regular artist. New installments appear every other Thursday. Also look for From The Library on the off-weeks, a series of mini-interviews with some of the hottest folks in comics and fantasy.
Leland and I have started a label of sorts for our self-published projects. Check out our stuff at Streetfables.
RED, a souped up urban rendition of the Little Red Riding Hood tale, debuted at MoCCA in June of 2006.
NIGHTVISIT, with art by Leland, debuted at the 2006 New York Comic-Con and now resides on Chemset.
We debuted two of my projects at SPX 2005: WEIRD SISTER and PORTRAITS OF TWENTY-TWO KEYS.
I am a regular contributior to Llewellyn’s yearly almanacs. I have pieces in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Tarot Reader, and bits in the 2007 Magical Almanac. I’ll have bits in the 2008 almanac, too.
I self-published four issues of a zine, PLATFORM, about busking in the subways. All issues are still available; ordering info is here. More on PLATFORM can be found here. I no longer maintain the blog on the original website (that’s what this site is for!).
My column The Craft was my personal take on the essentials of writing, written from the perspective of someone who is learning by doing. It used to be up at Scryptic Studios, which appears to be down now. I plan to make them available as time allows, at a venue such as Gather or something.
Leland and I have a short in the 2005 edition of SMUT PEDDLER, an anthology of erotic comics. It’ll be available in July 2005, in time for SDCC.
SONICDIARY! is another music blog, created and maintained by my best friend, Bethany Round, and I. Beth and I have been in each other’s back pockets for about twenty years now; the spirit of our best moments is what we’re after, here. The focus of SONICDIARY! is music and pop culture, with a particular emphasis on the music of our formative years (70’s and 80’s), though there will be plenty to say on current musical affairs, too. We love audience participation and we love to hear from our readers, so do check it out and check back often.
Leland and I have a short story in a comics anthology, starring characters created by my good friend Steven Goldman. The book is called STYX TAXI: A LITTLE TWILIGHT MUSIC. The book is being solicited in the August 2004 Previews (order code AUG042775) or can be purchased from Steven on his site.
